Throughout my life, I have looked at history for guidance and inspiration. Many great men and women have influenced me through their artistic legacies and their exemplary lives. To them, I owe the Awakening of my Spirit. But there is a multitude of ordinary men and women to whom I also feel indebted: my two grandmothers, widows of the Spanish Civil War and their children, the African boys who shared their dream with me in 1964, the Filipina women who worked with me in Azabache, and the Latino immigrants in New York who uncovered their despair to me… These people crossed my path silently at different stages in my life, teaching me courage with their quiet example. To them I owe my Fortitude.
I dedicate Mangenguey to all of them and to you.
Let us bring back the Light!
